Book Review: SUSTAINED by Emma Chase - Giveaway

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Publication Date: 25 August 2015

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will get you off. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and am knee deep in a damn compost pit.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, and defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

I love how an author can create a hero so set in his ways that you think it would be impossible for him to change but then he does and what happens then it's amazing. Sustained was that kind of story and Jake Becker was exactly that kind of hero; a successful defense attorney and a womanizer that in a million years would have thought that his life would change completely for one single woman and her six kids.

“I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t do for you.”

At thirty-years old, Jake has a set plan for his life: keep being the best at this job and always keep it strictly casual with the ladies. That's all he wants for his present and foreseeable future and he couldn't be more content with the idea. However, after a recent scare he realizes that nameless one-night-stands might not be the best option for him anymore so he decides to give dating a try even against his better judgement. It's during that time when he meets Chelsea McQuaid, a twenty-six-years old single, gorgeous, and enchanting woman that couldn't make him hotter even if she tried. The problem is that she's a package deal with being the guardian of her six orphaned nieces and nephews and a situation that couldn't be farthest from simple. So as expected, Chelsea and the kids are an immediate red-flag for Jake because again, the man is too set in his ways to even contemplate getting into that messy situation. Or so he thought. . .

“I don’t know if it’s because I have a hard-on for his aunt or because he reminds me so much of myself, but if anyone wants a piece of that kid they’ll have to come through me first.”

And that's when the magic of this book starts and what made it totally swoony for me. Seeing Jake give in little by little regardless of everything he'd planned before was so heart-melting, funny, and irresistible. This is a man that wasn't supposed to be the the touchy-feely kind of guy, oh no, instead he wanted to feel indifferent and tried not to let himself get bothered by his new feelings for this Chelsea and the kids. Yet this story shows how life can change in a blink of an eye when he let himself love and be loved. ♥ I have to emphasize once again how heart-melting and swoony this book was so picture this: six kids from ages of six-months to fourteen-years old who are a little bit of trouble makers but are as sweet as they come and a stubborn Jake that tries his hardest but can't help to fall in love with every single one of them. That plus Jake's connection with the kindhearted and sweet Chelsea were all really a beautiful and stellar love story to read.

“Their joy, their laughter, their love. I want to come home to it, bask in it, be the reason for it. But even more than that, I want to deserve them.”

I loved everything about this book: the excellent humor throughout the story, the chemistry between Jake and Chelsea, the sweet innocence of the kids, and the connections they all made. But within all those great times what I loved the most about this book has to be the little moments. You know, those moments where with just a word or a touch the characters make your heart swell with emotions? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about and there several of those in this book which I thought made all the difference for me making this story that much more heartfelt and wonderful. So for that I totally recommend this book if you enjoy heartwarming, sweet, and fun romances. This story will definitely make you smile from ear to ear, I'm telling you! Sustained can be read as a standalone so you can jump right into it. ;)
