Book Review: OVERRULED by Emma Chase

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Publication Date: 28 April 2015

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.
Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.
What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

This story was really something. It was funny as I expected since I'm very familiar with this author's magical humor but what I didn't anticipate was its surprising plot. Here the author introduces the hero and the story of his first love which then almost drives the whole book and I found that a little risky. Risky because I usually like to connect both my hero and heroine romantically right away and with too much of their past histories that can make it kind of difficult. Fortunately, I did connect them and felt connected to them at the end as the hero made me laugh even at times when I wanted to slap him into his senses, hehe. ;)

Stanton Shaw is a successful twenty-eight-years old defense attorney who lives a carefree life. Based in D.C. he makes sure he never gets attached to any woman other than the two he has in Missouri, his precious ten-year old daughter and high school sweetheart Jenny. Oh don't panic, no cheating in this story at all. You see, Stanton and Jenny have an arrangement that while apart they can live their lives freely but always keeping other relationships casual. That's how it's always been for them since Stanton moved out for college and law school and after their daughter was born. So of course with that arrangement, it's perfectly fine for Stanton to have his fun in D.C. and he currently has it with Sofia Santos, his dear friend and lawyer colleague.

“With a sharp grin and an almost evil spark in her eye, she grips my tie and pulls me back in for a kiss.”

Since day one Sofia has known about Stanton's past, his current situation in Missouri, and how their relationship could only be strictly casual sex. She's been totally fine with the arrangement and has been enjoying it just as much as him. However, when Stanton gets a very unexpected invitation to Jenny's wedding and he drags her there to help him stop the wedding, she soon starts to feel something more for her so called "friend with benefits."

“What we have—what he and I do together—is fun. Physical and convenient. And above all else, it was supposed to be simple. But the sick feeling in my stomach, the tinge of sour jealousy on my tongue—there’s nothing simple about that.”

Once they head to Missouri this story goes completely nuts and I loved it. There's crazy family members, tension, regrets, competition, and lots of confusion. During all that again, I did feel like slapping Stanton so he would wake up and make up his mind but it was also too funny to see him struggle in the mess he was in. Moreover, while him and Sofia took their time to realize their true feelings for each other and figuring out their situation, they had me laughing in the madness that was Missouri and everybody in there. Not to mention, I felt that their connection kept getting stronger with every chapter so it was very clear for me who was my heroine and what love story I was supposed to be cheering for. Yeah, when that switch finally happened it was perfect. ♥

“Darlin’, you have me. By the heart, by the balls, and any other way you want.”

I found this book sexy, funny and unexpected. I really enjoyed it. The humor, sexiness, and characters in the story really made me a fan of the series. Now I'm very curious to see what Ms. Chase has up her sleeve for the stories of Stanton's friends Jake and Brent! :D
