Book Review: WITH A TWIST by Staci Hart

Genre: New Adult
Publication Date: 16 July 2015

Love is somewhere near the bottom of Lily Thomas’ list of life goals, right next to competitive eating and underwater cave diving. She’s spent six years pirouetting and pliĆ©ing her way up the ranks of the New York Ballet with her eye on the prize and love in the back seat. But now that Blane Baker -- Lily’s long time crush -- is finally single, she’ll throw her rules out the window without thinking twice.

Reality with Blane isn’t as epic as the fantasy she imagined, and the truth sends her spinning straight into the arms of the man she never knew she’d always wanted.

West Williams has been friends with Lily since the day she moved into their building and he saved her armoire from a swift, sudden death by staircase. Their friendship has always been easy, the boundaries clearly defined. With neither of them willing to risk their relationship, they’ve drifted happily through the years as companions, never considering more.

That is, until they do. And that realization changes everything.

As far as friends-to-lovers romances go I'm usually used to similar kind of setups when it comes to their plots. You know, sometimes it's the childhood friends that get separated, the adult friends that get thrown by tragic, or the friends that move into something more but just as "friends." But in all those scenarios the common theme for me has been that the characters are always pretty much aware of their feelings for each other in one way or another. Well, that wasn't the case for With a Twist at all and that's exactly what I found refreshing about Lily and West's sweet story.

“You know how that can be when you care about somebody, but they don’t seem to know you exist. And then, one day, they see you.”

These characters have been friends for a long time now. They're the kind of best friends that can talk about anything and everything. Their relationship has always been clear, just an honest friendship, nothing more but not because they don't find each other attractive but because timing and circumstances have never connected them that way. Plus they're in each other's lives all the time and the idea of more would be almost unthinkable. So when and how do things start to change for these two then? Well, things begins when Lily starts to date after a long time of just casual relationships. That's when worry, over protectiveness, and jealousy take over West. Moreover, when a secret lady friend of West makes an appearance that doesn't sit very well with Lily either and that's when the complications and fun begin. ;)

West gave me a look.
“Has he ever taken you on a proper date?”
I gave him a look of my own. “No, but we’re a little busy.”
One dark eyebrow raised. “Not busy enough to stop you from ‘rehearsing,’ it would seem.”
I gaped dramatically. “Are you judging me, Weston Williams?”
He picked up his beer, feigning indifference, that liar. “Not at all, just observing.” He took a drink.

I loved the dynamic between these characters. They were so sweet and genuine with each other that it was endearing to watch them evolve from friends to lovers. Individually they were also great characters too and I thought they were perfect for each other. West being this handsome long-haired, bearded TA English major really made him a lethal combination of smart and sexy. Now Lily is this sweetheart of girl and a professional dancer who's passionate about her work and loves her friends dearly. So together and with the way they come to fall in love, they really created a refreshing and lovely kind of friends-to-lovers romance.

Something else I really liked from this story was the whole gang of friends that came with West and Lily. Oh yes, there was a whole group of mutual friends that were there during the fun, the complicated, and the crazy making this book that much more about the magic of friendship. That's right, a bunch of funny and loyal friends and a couple that unexpectedly finds love where least expected it's what this sweet book is all about and I really enjoyed it. ♥
