Book Review: THE BOURBON KINGS by J.R. Ward

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: 28 July 2015

SYNOPSIS

For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

REVIEW

5 STARS: GRIPPING DRAMA AT EVERY TURN!

I love picking up a new book and being surprised by it. There's no better feeling than that one for me specially when I'm not only reading a new book but a new author. That's right, this is my first book by J.R. Ward and I couldn't be happier that I decided to read it because this book SURPRISED me in the best way possible and for that I loved it. Seriously, this book was like going on a blind date and having no expectations at all yet, I came out of it elated and wanting to do it all over again as it was an experience like no other.

“If I wanted you when it was just a game”—that stare of his locked on her mouth—“in my current mood, I’m desperate for you.”

Yes, The Bourbon Kings was like no other book I've read. This story is complex as it has so many fascinating layers to it which are all wrapped around some gripping drama at every turn. To give you an idea of what I mean, imagine an exquisite soap opera and think of all the things that involve a story like that: drama, mystery, passion, scandals, power, money, rivalry, hate, crime, jealousy, suspense, and of course love just to name a few. That was what this book felt to me; like a high class, decadent soap opera full of some of the best drama I've read.

“That biggest mistake thing happened just as she got to the jambs. Later, when things had blown up in her face, after she’d overridden her walls of self-protection and gotten burned, she would become convinced that if she’d only kept going, she would have been fine. Their lives wouldn’t have slammed into each other’s and left such shrapnel all over her.”

This is the first book in a series yet it was rich. It does more than introduce characters and a plot, oh no, it took me right to Charlemont, Kentucky and made me experience the lives of the Bradford family. Lives surrounded by the opulent lifestyle of the rich and powerful, where money and prestige is all there is, and where everything is not exactly like it seems; something Tulane "Lane" Bradford knows more than anyone. After being called back to his childhood home in Easterly—the mansion of the Bradford family—due to an emergency, he never thought he would be back to the place where so many memories have haunted him. The first one being a scandal that made him lose his chance with the love of his life, Lizzie King. But seeing her there again at Easterly still so beautiful and independent as the mansion's head gardener, all those memories come back and so he decides that this time, after two-years, he's ready to prove to her that he was true to his feelings then and now even with all the complications that come with his family.

“You’re the love of my life, whether you’re with me or not.”

The problem is that once Lane arrives at Easterly a series of events start to unfold, risking a new huge scandal that will determine the future of his family and their bourbon-making empire.

Going back to the soap opera aspect of this book, yes the story focuses slightly more on the romance between Lane and Lizzie but let me tell you, there so much more. Here I got meet Lane's bother Edward and sister Virginia and really get into their individual stories too. Each of them being broken in their own way, carrying so much baggage from their past, and having dysfunctional relationships with their desired partners really creates some juicy drama. And all of that intertwines perfectly with Lane's own story and his mission to save his family in such a marvelous way.

“This is . . . your time, Lane. God has provided you with a sacred duty to keep this family together. You are the only one who can do it. This is all falling into place because it is your destiny to bind the blood once again. It happens every couple of generations. It’s happening now. This is your time.”

But there's even more! The suspense in this story takes the drama at another level and that has to be my favorite thing about this book. Really, I'd be reading a chapter and as things were going one way I'd hit a shocking moment leaving me saying "WHAT?!" and then the author would switch things leaving me hanging for a bit and make me focus on another aspect of the story. That was the writing style throughout the whole story and I absolutely loved it, talk about getting your readers engaged and engrossed. I never saw anything coming and even by the end when all the puzzle pieces kind of came together, I was still left with my "WHAT?!" and wishing like crazy I had sequel right in my hands.

“It comes in threes. Death always comes in threes.”

I LOVED this book and I think you're going to love it too if you're in the mood for something truly different. The Bourbon Kings is a one-of-a-kind story that not only will captivate you for its drama and suspense but also for it's multi-dimensional characters and romances. So much so that I think that by the end you will be just like me, asking for more of this scandalous, sexy, and super absorbing family! :D
