Book Review: PLAY by Kylie Scott

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: 25 March 2014

Mal Ericson, drummer for the world famous rock band Stage Dive, needs to clean up his image fast—at least for a little while. Having a good girl on his arm should do the job just fine. Mal doesn't plan on this temporary fix becoming permanent, but he didn't count on finding the one right girl.

Anne Rollins never thought she'd ever meet the rock god who plastered her teenage bedroom walls—especially not under these circumstances. Anne has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a wild life-of-the-party drummer couldn't end well. No matter how hot he is. Or could it?

Since I read Lick, the first book in the Stage Dive series, and I was first introduced to Malcolm Ericson I immediately felt something for him. His playfulness and his humor really captivated me. Yet, nothing prepared me for how much I was going to LOVE and ADORE him after reading his own story. Seriously, this man in Play was ten times funnier, ten times, sexier, ten times crazier, and one hundred times more irresistible. He was simply a drummer to die for from beginning to end and every word from his story was really music to my heart. ♥ I've read quite a few romantic comedies before but nothing has made me laugh as much as this book did. Page after pager it was a constant enjoyment and it wasn't just the comedy of it that stole my heart, it was also the fact that it came from a rock star from all people. A drummer with one-of-a-kind humor, over-the-top craziness, and such caring personality you wouldn't expect. That was Mal in a nutshell and I absolutely LOVED him.

“Your cheeks have gone all rosy. Are you thinking rude thoughts about me, Anne?”
“Liar,” he taunted in a soft voice. “You’re totally thinking of me with no pants on.”
I totally was.
“That’s just gross, dude. A massive invasion of my privacy.” He leaned in closer, his breath warming my ear. “Whatever you’re imagining, it’s bigger.”
“I’m not imagining anything.”
“I’m serious. It’s basically a monster. I cannot control it.”
“You’re pretty much going to need a whip and chair to tame it, Anne.”
“Stop it.”

Mal's story is as unexpected as him himself. He's suddenly in need of a fake girlfriend, the reasons? Unknown. But he really needs a girl to assume the role and it can't be just anyone. It has to be someone he can somehow trust and someone who can do the job without asking all the questions. So when Anne Rollins falls into his life at a party, she becomes the girl at the perfect place and time making her the go-to candidate. She's not only easy going but she doesn't mind his craziness, his humor, and his constant playfulness, no, she actually finds them all charming and irresistible. It doesn't hurt either that Anne is one of Mal's biggest fans and also in need of a new roommate since her last one just recently banished without a word leaving her financially unstable. All those things just make their arrangement that much more suitable but what they don't take into account is that their attraction is more than just physical, it's an ever growing chemistry that keeps bordering "fake" and the real thing.

“His hand smacked into my ass, making me jump. Then, fingers lazily scratching at stubble, he sauntered into the bathroom. My butt cheek stung. I made a mental note to kill him later, once we were alone. Kill him or screw him, whatevs. My hormones were so confused.”

This book cracked me up nonstop since the very first pages to the very last ones. Mal was incredible and the only way I can describe him is as "a puppy on steroids" (Ev's words from Lick). Really! This man is gorgeous, the epitome of a hot rock star, and a dreamlike drummer who makes all the panties drop with just a smilie. Yeap, he's right down irresistible and that easily answers the "puppy" part of the equation. Now the "on the steroids" part is all about him being unstoppable with his humor, playfulness, flirting, and sexiness. He's just the complete package and he knows very well how to use all his charms to disarm any woman and Anne is no different. Something very unique about him is his talent of coming up with the most random, funniest, and yet alluring comments right on the spot. He was just a natural at doing that and it was hilarious watching Anne trying to figure out when he was series and when he was joking. That was almost an every minute occurrence for her and she loved every of those minutes.

“No bra?” he asked, his voice casual.
“No. With this dress, I can’t … We don’t actually need to discuss this right now.”
“That’s going to be a hell of a distraction, pumpkin,” he breathed. “Trying to look down the front of your dress all night.”
The look he gave me made me quiver in strange places. This was the problem; my inability to tell if he was serious or not.

The sweet Anne was really a sweetheart and also the perfect girl for this crazy and lovable drummer. Her patience, genuineness, strong heart, and even her developing spunk were some of the characteristics that caught Mal's eyes and heart. Moreover, she would give as good as she would get from Mal so she was incredibly funny too. In the midst of crazy that he brought with him, she always was able to come up with the funniest afterthoughts and see things on the brighter side no matter how odd they were. She was just lovely and so well deserved of getting her prince charming and having him be no other than Mal Ericson. ♥ ♥

“Hi,” he said, gripping my upper arms. Despite the feeling of not wanting to be touched, something in me unwound at the contact. At his nearness.
“I need a kiss.”
“Do you, now? Then you’re in luck. For you, I have an endless supply.”
God, he was so sweet.

This story was so cleverly put together. While the most part of Play provided so much entertainment, the ending revealed many truths that couldn't be more touching, heartwarming, and inspiring. It was a beautiful and perfect ending with closure yet full of possibilities and I was very happy with it. :) Now the sexiness mixed with the playfulness in the story is something really worth mentioning because I loved those hot scenes. Every kiss, touch, and anything beyond that between these characters was magnificent and such a treat for me. Really, Anne and Mal's chemistry was heavenly but also so lively and completely effortless that I loved them together every single time. This rockstar really knew how to make his girl happy for sure, hehe.

“My pumpkin’s an animal when she gets going.”

I adore this series and I adore all these characters. I can't wait to continues with Jimmy's and Ben's stories so I can fall for those rock gods as well. However, now that I've truly experienced Mal I'm not sure any of his bandmates can now compare but I guess I'll have to wait and see. :D If you haven't yet met the amazing men from the Stage Dive band, don't miss out any longer! These men's stories are for sure irresistible must-reads, I guarantee it. ;)
