Book Review: BAD ROMEO by Leisa Rayven

Genre: New Adult
Publication Date: 23 December 2014

While performing the greatest love story of all time, they discovered one of their own...

Cassie Taylor was just another acting student with big dreams at her prestigious performing arts college, then she met Ethan Holt. She was the good girl actress. He was the bad boy on campus. But one fated casting choice for Romeo and Juliet changed it all. Like the characters they were playing on stage, Cassie and Ethan's epic romance seemed destined. Until it ended in tragedy when he shattered her heart.

Now they've made it to Broadway where they're reunited as romantic leads once again, and their passionate scenes force them to confront the heartbreaking lows and pulse-pounding highs of their intense college affair. For Ethan, losing Cassie was his biggest regret, and he's determined to redeem himself. But for Cassie, even though Ethan was her first and only great love, he hurt her too much to ever be trusted again. The trouble is, working with him reminds her that people who rub each other the wrong way often make the best sparks. And when it comes to love, sometimes it's the things that aren't good for us that are the most irresistible.

Wow, it's not everyday I find a book like this one. A book with such a compelling and refreshing story that makes me want to read it over and over again. Bad Romeo was just incredible, I loved every single thing about it, from the way the story was masterfully put together to the amazing and strong characters that make this whole story so alive, fiery, hilarious, and truly fascinating.

While performing the greatest love story of all time, they discovered one of their own...

What is it about a bad boy that melts a woman's heart so easily? Could it be his gorgeousness, his swagger, or his troubled mind? Probably all of the above, right? That bad boy can even be rude and sometimes downright an asshole but when there's a unique and irresistible connection there with him, no way a woman can ignore it no matter the risk to her heart. And hat's exactly what happens to Cassie Taylor when she meets her bad romeo, Ethan Holt.

I can’t deny it anymore. I want him, even though he drives me insane.

This amazing second chance romance starts when Cassie meets Ethan in drama school and from the first look they see sparks. But it's until later on stage when they're cast to play Romeo and Juliet that the true magic happens. Their chemistry is electrifying that it's not hard at all for them to feel it in real life making their attraction for each other that much more intense and irresistible. The problem is this is not your typical fall-in-love kind of story, no, this is a story about love-and-hate, pull-and-push, and I-can't-want-you-but-need-you kind of story. Cassie feels that strong pull for Ethan and she knows he feels it too but he keeps pushing her away regardless. Ethan on the other hand, knows he would be bad for Cassie because of all his baggage and his record of breaking hearts. However, this story did not make my heart race so much for nothing so yes, these characters indeed slowly succumb to their true feelings making their love story a chaotic one filled with consuming and glorious tension.

“Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me the look on your face when you saw me a moment ago wasn't excitement with a touch of ‘please fuck me now.’ Tell me you don’t think about me. Dream about me.”

Bad Romeo is completely told in Cassie's POV in two alternative times, past and present. The past being when she meets Ethan in drama school and they fall in love and the haunted present where they reunite again six years later to play once again lovers onstage in a Broadway show. I loved how the author created those two alternate times in the story and made the transitions so flawless and captivating to read. Moreover, thanks to the story being structured that way I was able to see how their mistakes, regrets, and sorrows had affected Cassie and Ethan over time and with each chapter I read I kept understanding why and how deeply and that was such an incredible experience for me.

We've never been over. You know it as well as I do. Even when I was halfway around the world and you hated my guts, we weren't over. You can feel it between us now. And the closer we are, the stronger it gets.

How I loved that glorious tension in this story! From the very beginning Cassie and Ethan are submerged in a delicious sexual/emotional tension that kept me so enthralled with anticipation until the very end. It was like waiting for the bomb to drop but loving every second of the wait because the other components in this story make you not wanting it to the end at all. Really, there was never a dull moment for me while reading. These characters both shocked me and cracked me up so much with their eloquence, bluntness, and audacity with each other. Cassie may have been timid at first but later she gets brave enough to go after what she wants and her approaches were awesome. I truly loved her character and always connected with her during both her highs and lows. She was just an outstanding heroine. Now Ethan was something else completely. He's a bad boy not afraid to speak his mind and and oh boy, doesn't he have the sharpest tongue. I loved how he kept surprising me and driving me crazy with his indecisiveness and how later he melted my heart when I got to understand where he was coming from. He was totally an irresistible complex character that just like Cassie I got to love regardless of his flaws.

As much as he broke my heart, I broke his as well.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Bad Romeo is now one of my favorite books this year without a doubt! I can't wait to read the sequel and final book (Broken Juliet) in this story so I can continue Cassie and Ethan's journey which was paused here perfectly. Oh that ending, it left at peace yet super excited for more of this true and marvelous romance. So yes my readers, this is a total must-read from me, a must-read I would never be able to recommend enough! :D Oh, and I have the perfect soundtrack for this amazing book! Every single time I listen to this SONG I think of Cassie and Ethan nonstop. ♥

Favorite Quotes:

The more time I spend with him, the more he invades my dreams. I don’t want to remember, but he pushes through.

I didn’t know how much I wanted to be kissed by him until this moment, but now, every cell of my body craves it. Everything tingles with vicious anticipation.

I can’t believe that in the world of wrong we’ve created together, this can still feel so right.

We’re like these giant magnets that keep flipping over and over again, pulling each other in, then pushing away.

There are times in every actor’s life when the enormous mess of possibility and make-believe is distilled into a crystal-clear point of clarity. When the line between imagination and invention blurs, and talent and conviction converge for a brief, shining moment.

Juliet inhabited me completely. Now, I'm living her reality, my voice says her words, my body feels her emotions, and my brain struggles to understand that the man I'm looking at is real, perfect, and mine.
