Book Review: STEPBROTHER DEAREST by Penelope Ward

Genre: New Adult
Publication Date: September 29, 2014

You’re not supposed to want the one who torments you.

When my stepbrother, Elec, came to live with us my senior year, I wasn’t prepared for how much of a jerk he’d be.

I hated that he took it out on me because he didn’t want to be here.
I hated that he brought girls from our high school back to his room.
But what I hated the most was the unwanted way my body reacted to him.

At first, I thought all he had going for him were his rock-hard tattooed abs and chiseled face. Then, things started changing between us, and it all came to a head one night.

Just as quickly as he’d come into my life, he was gone back to California.

It had been years since I’d seen Elec.

When tragedy struck our family, I’d have to face him again.

And holy hell, the teenager who made me crazy was now a man that drove me insane.

I had a feeling my heart was about to get broken again.

This book was outstanding! I loved everything about it but what I loved the most was the way it was written: very straight forward with the dialogue and with every thought and action from the characters. There was not a single dull moment in this whole book and I never felt a negative impatience for things to happen because the story just rolled out perfectly and kept me happily hooked from beginning to end.

Stepbrother Dearest is the story about a forbidden attraction, a forbidden connection, and a forbidden beautiful love. . . a love I fell in love with too.

Greta meets her stepbrother Elec when he moves into the her mother and his dad's house during their senior year of high school. From the moment she sees him the attraction is instant. He's this sexy tattooed-bad-boy with the most gorgeous face and body she has ever seen so from that moment she can't stop day dreaming about him. Not even when Elec is always being a jerk to her.

“Greta:  Did you enjoy the meal?
Elec:  Scramble the letters of meal. You get LAME. Your meal=lame.
Greta:  Why are you so mean?
Elec:  Why are you so lame?”

Yep, this irresistible bad boy is constantly being rude and mean to Greta and for "no reasons." You would think that a girl in those circumstances would learn the lesson and stay away from the guy but Greta just couldn't. She felt in her heart that there was so much more that met the eye when it came to Elec and she was determined to discover what that was.

“I’m gonna kill him with kindness. I don’t care how much of a...dick...(oh goodness) he wants to be to me. The worst thing I can do is let him think he’s affecting me.”

Oh Elec, this boy left me truly speechless more than a couple of times with the things that came out of his mouth. His bluntness, cockiness, and rudeness were astounding every single time. I could see exactly why Greta couldn't get out of his spell, he was just alluring and offered no chance of escaping his seductive ways. But beneath all that tough exterior there was a hidden attraction that Greta never thought would be reciprocated.

“You’re the only girl in the entire world that’s forbidden, and fuck me if that doesn’t make me want you more than anything.”

When things started to get dangerous and heated between these two my heart was racing nonstop and the anticipation felt incredible. The teasing, the pranks, and the constant flirting just added to their pent-up frustration making the very important moments in the story that much more explosive and breathtaking. But as much as there was excitement in this story there was also a lot of angst. Angst because remember this is a forbidden love and Elec just couldn't be with Greta so he left her and seven years passed them by. . .

“A broken heart is still a beating one.”

When destiny brought them back together things weren't easy this time around either. Besides the old ones, there were now new reasons why they couldn't be together but that spellbinding attraction between them was still there and tempting them like the devil. So to be together they had to let go of the fears that have been hunting them and truly open their hearts to each other. Only then that attraction which by then had turned into love could finally make them whole.

“I know I’m not supposed to care. But when it comes to you, what I’m supposed to be feeling has never seemed to matter.”

I loved how this second part of the book unfolded. Again, the anticipation was delicious, gripping, and at times heartbreaking. I was shocked yet again by Elec's fascinating personality and by his own story. By the end of the book I fell completely for him, I understood then where his strength came from and why he was the way he was and that just made me love him more. I also got to love Greta so much by the end. She never gave up on Elec and was always his biggest supporter and source of love which he desperately needed. This young lady mended a broken heart, made it heal, and gave it hope.

“Greta made me feel things I never had before. She made me feel loved.”

This was an exciting, beautiful, and a total refreshing read for me. It was a story that kept my emotions racing, made me crazy for the hero, and kept me super connected the plot. It was also a story with a touching message about accepting one's fate because even from the worst circumstances in life the most amazing and memorable moments can occur. ♥

“Through death there was life. Through hate there was love.”

Loooved it!! This is one of my favorite books for sure now and of course one I totally recommend!
