Blog Tour Review: BEAUTY AND THE MUSTACHE by Penny Reid - Giveaway

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Humor
Publication Date: August 28, 2014

There are three things you need to know about Ashley Winston: 1) She has six brothers and they all have beards, 2) She is a reader, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Former beauty queen, Ashley Winston’s preferred coping strategy is escapism. She escaped her Tennessee small town, loathsome father, and six brothers eight years ago. Now she escapes life daily via her Amazon kindle one-click addiction. However, when a family tragedy forces her to return home, Ashley can’t escape the notice of Drew Runous— local Game Warden, reclusive mountain man, bear wrestler, philosopher, and everyone’s favorite guy. Drew’s irksome philosophizing in particular makes Ashley want to run for the skyscrapers, especially since he can’t seem to keep his exasperating opinions— or his soulful poetry, steadfast support, and delightful hands— to himself. Pretty soon the girl who wanted nothing more than the escape of the big city finds she’s lost her heart in small town Tennessee.

This was my first book by Penny Reid and I have to say now that I've been missing out! The Beauty and the Mustache was a sweet story but its sweetness wasn't ordinary. This story was smart-sweet, humorous-sweet, poignant-sweet, and just poetic-sweet and for all that I really liked it.

"Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened."

This is the story of Ashley Winston aka Ash, a Chicago nurse from Tennessee. She left her home town eight years ago in search for new experiences and a new life. Back home she left her mother and her six brothers which she always thought tormented her way too much growing up. But regardless of her living away or the distance, she always maintained a strong relationship with her mother. Well, that was until something happened that made her rush back to Tennessee to see check on her.

Now back in the home town she left behind several years ago, Ash finds herself lost. Her mother is sick and the six brothers she once knew she doesn't know them at all anymore. Moreover, there's a new friend in the family that strikes all her senses because he's a gorgeous Viking-like mountain man she can't stop thinking about.

"He was the Scottish highlander, Viking conqueror, bodice-ripper historical romance kind of handsome; and unshaven, lion wrestling, mountain man recluse, toss you over his shoulder and plunder your goodies kind of handsome. He was both scary and swoony. I wanted to braid his beard. I also wanted to run away."

Drew Runous is smart, philosophical, and the Viking-like mountain man that is stirring unexpected feelings in Ash. Surprisingly, he's also the man she finds comfort in during her times of distress. He's still a mystery to her though because she doesn't understand why he's so connected to her family or why it's so hard to read what he's thinking or feeling when it comes to her.

"He was looking at me like I was sugar, like I was cake covered in frosting, and he couldn't decide whether he wanted to bite me or lick me first."

What I found very gripping and unique about the romance in this story was that it revolved around feelings of sorrow, comfort, and healing. That's why for like half of the book and because of their circumstances, the emotions that transpired between Ash in Drew were so unexpected that they almost felt wrong/misplaced to Ash. Therefore, their coming together came slowly but very sweetly and romantic due to Drew's amazing and poetic heart.

"I removed nothing. I made no room for you.
Yet you arrived. I saw you. You spoke.
That was it. I gave nothing, but I lost everything."

How I loved the poetry in this book! It was captivating and so very heart-melting. I felt completely enamored by Drew's words that seemed so simple and yet conveyed so much beautiful meaning. He was just swoony for not knowing how much of a romantic he was and for having such a good and selfless heart. Ash on the other hand, brought the humor and silliness to this story. This girl was funny, her wittiness and the ways she challenged Drew really made me laugh. I enjoyed watching her figuring out her story, rekindling her relationships with her mother and "hillbilly" brothers which I thought were super funny too, and of course I loved watching her fall for the incredible Viking-like poet. ♥

"He taught me that you don't dance in the fire; you dance in the rain."

If you're looking for unique writing and for a different kind of romance, Beauty and the Mustache would be great choice! Ash and Drew will make you laugh and fall in love both at the same time with their one of a kind poetic-humorous love story.

"Drew melted my butter."

About the Author:
SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories.  I hope you enjoy their stories.
