In the Spotlight: REBECCA DONOVAN - Interview & Giveaway

Rebecca Donovan
Author of the Breathing series

I've had the pleasure to meet this author three times already. The last time was at the DC Author Event in Washington, DC on May 3 where I had the opportunity to do a small interview with her and all the authors at the event. Everyday I'm spotlighting each author I met at this great event and today I'm starting with the lovely Rebecca Donovan.

Rebecca was so sweet with me and with all the bloggers and readers at the event that I really enjoyed seeing her again. I had an awesome time asking her my questions and she was more than happy to answer them. Here's what I asked her:

#1 - As readers we get very attached to characters so it’s sad when we finish their stories. Now, I can imagine that for a writer it is even harder to finish writing a story knowing that’s the end for the characters. How do you transition from finishing a novel/series to starting a new one?

Rebecca told me that her transition process can be an emotional one. She usually takes a couple of months after finishing a story before starting a new one. It's a process of letting go for her as she does get very attached to her stories and characters. However, during the editing period she says, new voices may start coming to her bringing new ideas about new projects which helps in the transition and excites her at the same time.

#2 - One popular component in romance books is sex scenes so I wonder… When writing, how do you decide how much sex to put in your stories? Or do you mostly follow your genre (YA, NA, Erotic Romance, Erotica, etc.)?

In her books, Rebecca tries to stay away from writing sexual graphic scenes. She believes her stories don't need it because they focus more on the emotional connections between characters and the situations they go through. As a writer, her goal is to make readers feel her stories and sex scenes are just not one of her ways to accomplish that.

#3 - Do you consider yourself a romance genre writer or a writer who uses love stories to explore a wide range of themes?

"Neither, I consider myself a Realistic Fiction writer instead." Rebecca said her books are about human stories with conflicts and those conflicts don't necessarily revolve around romance.

More About Rebecca:
Rebecca & Me @DC Author Event
Optimism seeps from every pore of my body. I truly believe what’s supposed to happen… will. In that regard, I don’t know how to give up; it’s not part of my biological make-up.

I’m a passionate (and some would say overly enthusiastic) individual. I learn by doing (and have been burned more times than I’d like to admit). But I will always throw my entire self into whatever I do – fail or succeed.

I think this is evident when I write. I leave nothing behind, and spill it all out onto the pages. I give it all to my readers – love it or hate it.

The path I’m on is very often my own. Sometimes I veer off at the sight of something more interesting or captivating and get caught in the vines and thorns in order to experience the beauty and intrigue others often pass by. And I always meet the most interesting people along the way…

❥ REASON TO BREATHE (Breathing #1)
"No one tried to get involved with me, and I kept to myself. This was the place where everything was supposed to be safe and easy. How could Evan Mathews unravel my constant universe in just one day?"

In the affluent town of Weslyn, Connecticut, where most people worry about what to be seen in and who to be seen with, Emma Thomas would rather not be seen at all. She’s more concerned with feigning perfection while pulling down her sleeves to conceal the bruises - not wanting anyone to know how far from perfect her life truly is. Without expecting it, she finds love. It challenges her to recognize her own worth - but at the risk of revealing the terrible secret she’s desperate to hide.

❥ BARELY BREATHING (Breathing #2)
Emma’s struggle with an abusive home life came to a heart pounding conclusion in the final chapters of "Reason to Breathe". Now everyone in Weslyn knows Emma’s secret, but Carol can’t hurt Emma anymore. Some are still haunted by the horror of that night, and some must face the repercussions of their choices. Fans of Rebecca Donovan’s debut novel will discover there’s still much to learn about Emma’s life.

❥ OUT OF BREATH (Breathing #3)
Emma leaves Weslyn and everyone in it behind to attend Stanford University, just as she always intended. A shell of her former self, she is not the same girl. She is broken, and the only way that she’ll be whole again is through forgiveness. Emma must find a way to forgive herself and recognize her own worth before she can receive the love she deserves. This final installment will have readers holding their breath until the very last page.

New Book Coming Out in September 2014: WHAT IF

I stand and offer my hand to help her up. Her cheeks are flushed and a few loose curls cling to them. I run my thumb along her jaw, freeing the strands. She looks up at me in expectation, her eyes so blue they make it impossible to look away. She runs her hands down the front of her dress nervously. And in that second she becomes the young girl I grew up with, and I miss a breath.

“You can kiss me now” she says ever so softly.
